Steve-O

This is Steve-O, he is deaf. He wrote me on Facebook saying I snubbed him at the local Albertsons. That he recognize me from Facebook. After I apologized he agreed to sit for me. It was interesting not having verbal influence over my subject. I would make gestures and he understood most of them. It was fun.

Marley

This is Marley one of my current subjects. He has a skin disease and all those little bumps are pimples or black heads. He says working with me is helping him come out from hiding. I have been exploring the secrecy of mask we wear as individuals. Taking classes at the college I was extremely guarded and afraid to share private information about my life. I thought my past would victimize me and I would be judged unfairly. Alanis Morissette said this and has sung about it. I always thought wow she must be around really cool people because there is no way I can be like this in a public setting. But I realize I was just making excuses. Photography has lent me more confidence to be transparent and be more open, there is a lot of energy spent in hiding and I’m working with imagery that explore those feelings and ideas.

Male Nude #1

This is my first male nude. There is a lot going on behind the scenes of this image. I was tense for a few reasons, one it was my first time shooting a nude and the other I was new to using strobe lighting. I was working in a panic. This image was a big success for me at school and let the faculty know that I was serious about my photography. It later caused controversy because it was put up in the school’s gallery for a student show then removed for being offensive. It brought me a lot of attention. I’m the first student at LBCC to have their art work be removed from the gallery. A quick story about the model he was afraid his penis was going to photograph small, he kept playing with it and this is an in-between shot from the posed captures. I thought this image capture him the most honestly with his insecurities and male beauty.
